After a one week break, the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table reconvened in Orcutt on Monday to honor the area's finest athletes. Two basketball players took home the Athlete of the Week honors.
Valley Christian Academy's Simone Swain was named Female Athlete of the Week. The 5-10, sophomore averaged 16 points and 13 rebounds in two wins last week for the Lions, who are ranked #2 in CIF's Division 6 this week.
The sophomore scored 18 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked 5 shots in a 40 point win over Cuyama Valley. She added 13 points and 15 boards in a 16 point victory over Cate. She leads the team this season by averaging 15 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks per game.
The Lions are 15-1 overall and 6-0 in league.
"We're pretty tight because we're a small school so we're good friends and I think we play well together on the court," said Swain.
Allan Hancock College freshman Demetrius Thomas was named Male Athlete of the Week. The 6-8 freshman from Connecticut scored a season-high 39 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the Bulldogs' 115-102 win at rival Cuesta in a Western State Conference game.
"My teammates were looking for me. I was like pretty much open half the time. Plus, I had a short defender on me so it was kind of easy to get to the basket," said Thomas, who leads the WSC and ranks 6th in the state with 19.8 points per game. He's also averaging 8.6 rebounds for the 16-7 Bulldogs.
Hancock is 3-1 in WSC play. The Bulldogs host 4-0 LA Pierce on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
