An outside team of auditors were in Santa Maria on Tuesday to begin an independent audit of the city's police department.

Four attorneys from the Los Angeles-based Office of Independent Review spent the day interviewing members of the police department and other city employees regarding the SMPD operation.

The audit teamis headed by Mike Gennaco,a former federal prosecutor.

Theirmission is to take a fresh look at the department's policies, procedures and training.

City manager Rick Haydon ordered the review after the shooting of Officer Albert Covarrubias , Junior, in January by another officer.

"While certainly the most recent Covarrubias shooting is going to informing to our review, it is not going to be limited to just that incident," said Gennaco on Tuesday.

Gennaco also said he is not sure how long it will take for his team to put their report together on their observations.
