CAL FIRE closed the Avila Beach Golf Course temporarily Thursday afternoon because of a chemical incident.
Fire crews say a battalion chief reported the leak just before 1:40 p.m. Thursday. The leak created a small brush fire at the golf course.
Two CAL FIRE engines responded and crews say environmental health officials were on-call.
The leak was caused by a pump that works to moderate pH levels in the lake at the golf course. CAL FIRE said the tank is older, and the golf course is working with them to replace it with a safer model.
Fire crews say this type of incident is rare. Crews wore special masks to protect themselves from breathing the sulfur.
