Two Central Coast hospitals are recognized as being in the top 5 percent of safest in the U.S.
Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria and Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital received the 2010 HealthGrades "Patient Safety Excellence Award."
They were evaluated between 2006 and 2008 on 12 patient safety indicators from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
In addition to identifying the rates of patient safety events, HealthGrades created a composite score to identify the best-performing hospitals.
According to HealthGrades, if all hospitals performed at this level approximately 218,572 patient safety events and 22,590 Medicare deaths could have been avoided, saving nearly $2.1 billion in that time period.
238 hospitals of nearly 5,000 studied were given the award.
