RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say an 11-month-old girl was rescued after an apparent pool accident at an Orange County home.

The Orange County Register reports Monday that 52-year-old retired fire captain Joe Kerr was working in his Coto de Caza yard Sunday when he heard someone scream a child's name.

Kerr says he jumped a fence and ran toward the home where he found the baby by a backyard pool, blue from the waist up. Her mother was on the phone with 911.

Kerr began rescue breathing and after about a minute, the girl spit up water and cried.

Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Marc Stone says the baby's prognosis is positive but she must be monitored to ensure oxygen deprivation didn't cause neurological damage.
