It's hard to believe 2011 is almost here and many are thinking about their New Year's resolutions.
One of the top resolutions every year is getting out of debt.
Brooke Salvini is a certified financial planner.
She recommends debt triage.
It's taking a hard, objective assessment of your debts and prioritizing in which order you will pay them off.
Salvini says accept that it may take years to get out of debt but reminds people it won't last forever.
She also suggests visualizing the feeling of being debt free.
Salvini said, "My top piece of advice is to enlist the help of other people. Either your family or an accountability partner, particularly children can be very creative in coming up with solutions. "
According to CreditCards.com, the average credit card debt per household is $15,788.
