A benefit bbq took place in Orcutt for 15-year-old Madelyn Cofield. She was diagnosed with leukemia and recently had a bone marrow transplant. Her donor was her 12-year-old brother Nathan. The money raised at the event will help pay for young Maddie's medical costs. Margaret Cofield, Madelyn's mother, said, "I'm just totally amazed, there are so many people here, so much went into it. Girls are having the bake sale and "Be the Match" is here. It's just pretty overwhelming." Cofield mentioned "Be the Match." It's a bone marrow drive to encourage people to sign up and be a donor. The Cofield's feel fortunate. They said there are numerous families who don't have a match and stressed it's an easy process. It just takes getting your cheek swabbed.
