Two Central Coast athletes earned All-State Athlete of the Year recognition from Cal-Hi Sports, the popular prep website.
Recent Lompoc High graduate Nikko Hayes was one of ten athletes statewide named Male Athletes of the Year in Division III. Hayes enjoyed a breakout senior year for the football team in the fall. He rushed for 1,081 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Los Padres League champion Braves. He averaged 11 yards per carry and scored a scholarship to FCS-level Idaho State as a result.
Hayes finished his senior year with a fifth place finish in the 300 meter hurdles at the CIF State Track and Field Meet. He was named the Male Athlete of the Year by the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table.
Atascadero High's Robbie Berwick was one of thirteen named Male Junior Athletes of the Year in California. Berwick spent the fall leading the football team to a surprising CIF semifinal berth. The quarterback threw for 1,678 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also ran for 346 yards and 5 touchdowns.
In the winter, Berwick led the Greyhound basketball team to a share of the Pac 7 League title and a fifth-consecutive CIF quarterfinal appearance. The point guard averaged 18 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds per game his junior season.
Robbie has already received scholarship offers to play basketball at Florida State, UTEP, UC Irvine, Cal Poly, UCSB, Fresno State and Stetson. He's headed to an important tournament in Las Vegas next week where he will play in front of hundreds of college coaches.
