An Arizona man is being treated for major injuries at a San Luis Obispo hospital after he veered directly into the path of a pickup truck Monday, California Highway Patrol said.
CHP investigators say Stephen Tobin, 78, of Aguila, Arizona was riding his bicycle westbound on Nacimiento Lake Drive just west of Oak Flat Road around 10:00 a.m. when he made a sudden left turn directly in front of a Dodge Ram truck that was also traveling westbound. Tobin was hit and ejected from his bicycle. He was wearing a helmet but still suffered severe injuries, according to CHP.
Investigators say drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a role in the incident. The driver of the truck, a 72-year-old Paso Robles woman, was not cited.
The incident is still under investigation.
