Nick Torres and Jimmy Allen led the Cal Poly offense with two hits apiece in the 22nd ranked Mustangs 5-2 non-conference win at San Jose State on Tuesday. The Mustangs, who've now won four in a row, improved to 32-14 on the season. The Spartans fell to 14-34.
Freshman Casey Bloomquist earned the victory to improve to 4-1 with 6 2/3 innings of work. He allowed just 4 hits and 2 earned runs. He walked none and struck out 2. Taylor Chris threw 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief, while Reed Reilly earned his 13th save with a scoreless ninth inning of work.
Cal Poly scored single runs in the second and third innings. Allen doubled home Torres with two outs in the second and Brian Mundell singled home Denver Chavez with two outs in the third. San Jose State scored one in the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1, but Cal Poly responded with a run-scoring grounder from Ellis that drove in Peter Van Gansen, who had doubled. SJSU scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Cal Poly added two key insurance runs in the eighth inning on a RBI single from Tommy Pluschkell and a sacrifice fly from Van Gansen.
Torres and Allen had 2 hits each, while Torres scored twice. Cal Poly tallied 9 hits, while the Spartans had 5.
San Jose State used nine different pitchers, who each threw 1 inning.
Cal Poly returns to action Friday when it opens a three game Big West series at UC Irvine. The teams are tied for third place with 11-7 records.
