A nine-run fourth inning propelled the San Luis Obispo Blues to a 12-1 win over Team Vegas to clinch at least a share of their second-straight California Collegiate League title on Wednesday night in Sinsheimer Stadium.
The Blues improved to 20-9 in league action and 32-13 overall. They hold a two game lead over rival Santa Barbara in the standings. SLO can clinch its first-ever outright title on Thursday with a win over Vegas in its league-finale or with any Team Vegas win at Santa Barbara this weekend. The Blues and Foresters shared the crown last summer.
Mission Prep and Cuesta College graduate Alex Detz started the Blues' offense in the bottom of the third inning. The Mississippi State-bound infielder drilled his first home run of the summer over the right field wall to tie the game at 1-1.
The Blues erupted for 9 runs and sent 12 men to the plate in the fourth inning to break it open. Cody Dufrene singled in a run to give the Blues the lead for good 2-1. Tanner Witt, Tanner Anderson and Tanner Donnels added run-scoring hits in the frame. Austin Grisham and Keegan Dale drew walks with the bases loaded to force in a run each.
Five Blues had at least two hits. Witt and Grisham each had 3 hits. Witt drove in 3 runs. Anderson, Detz and catcher Patrick Quintanilla had 2 hits piece.
Three Blues pitchers combined to strike out 15 batters. Starter Gandy Stubblefield earned the win. He scattered 3 hits and 1 unearned run in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out 11. Chad Girodo struck out 2 in 1 1/3 innings, while SLO High and Cuesta graduate John Tiedemann fanned 2 in the ninth to seal the win.
The Blues and Vegas play Thursday night at 6pm in Sinsheimer Stadium.
