The Blues' Will Maddox helped extend a late rally, but the North Team's ninth inning rally fell short as the South won 3-2 in the California Collegiate League All-Star Game in Compton on Wednesday night. The game aired live on Fox Sports West.
The North Team featured eleven San Luis Obispo Blues and eleven Santa Barbara Foresters. However, the South Team took advantage of four North errors to build a 3-0 lead. They scored first in the sixth inning on a double off the left-field wall by Matt Tietz out of Rutgers, who's playing for the Los Angeles Brewers this summer. The South scored two more runs later in the game aided by an errant throw to first base on a ground ball.
Maddox stepped up to the plate with 1 out and 2 on in the bottom of the ninth. He chopped a ball to second baseman, but the first baseman broke toward the ball and the toss to the pitcher covering first base ended up near the dugout. One run scored on the play and Maddox was safe at first. The North Team's second run scored when Maddox, a junior infielder from the University of Tennessee, tried to steal second base. The throw to second ended up in center field, which allowed the runner from third to score to make it a 3-2 game.
The South pitcher ended the threat and the game with a strikeout to seal the victory.
The Blues return to CCL play on Thursday at 5pm at rival Santa Barbara. San Luis Obispo and the Foresters are tied for first place in the North Division with identical 17-11 marks in league play. The two rivals shared the CCL titles in 2011 and 2012.
