Blues lose opener at NBC World Series

The San Luis Obispo Blues lost 2-1 to the Hutchinson (Kansas) Monarchs to start play at the NBC World Series in Wichita, Kansas. The Blues now go to the losers bracket of the double-elimination tournament, they will play at 10:30am central time on Sunday.

Blues pitcher Corey Ray pitched seven innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out seven. He gave up five hits and one walk before giving way to Matt Lynch who pitched a perfect eighth inning.

The Blues only managed four hits and were down 1-0 when they scored in the top of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Will Maddox. The Monarchs took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth inning on a run scoring ground out.

First basemen Andrew Lee went 2-4 with a run scored for the Blues who now have their work cut out for them in the 16 team tournament.

The Santa Barbara Foresters won their first round game at the NBC World Series on Friday night. The two-time defending champions beat the Northwest (WA) Honkers, 4-0.
