Body that washed ashore Thursday identified as Santa Barbara man

Santa Barbara Police have released the name of the man whose body washed ashore near Hendry's Beach Thursday.

The body has been identified as 48-year-old Santa Barbara resident Gordon Jennell.

Investigators say Jennell's body washed ashore at about 1:10p.m. Thursday. They say his body was clad in a wetsuit, and there were no visible signs of trauma or foul play. They say he did not have any identification on him, but they found an unlocked pick-up truck parked near the top of the Mesa Steps. Inside the vehicle, was a wallet with identification that matched the victim.

Jennell's family was notified of his death. They told officers he was a frequent surfer at local beaches. His surf board apparently washed ashore Friday morning.

Investigators say they're still unsure of how Jennell died. The exact cause of death will be determined by the Coroner's Office.
