Bomb scare shuts down Santa Maria airport for hours

The Santa Maria public airport is back open tonight after a bomb scare brought holiday traffic to a halt, but it certainly wasn't the way many people expected to kick off their holiday travel plans.

Ariport officials say a suspicous suitcase was discovered inside the terminal around 1pm. They immediately evacuated the airport and shut it down. The bomb squad was called to the scene. The suspciious itme turned out to be an electrocni teddy bear. Three flight were affected by the bomb scare, delaying passengers for hours.

The airport reopened around 5pm. Airport officials say operations have returned to normal.

Most passengers were waiting for the 3:15 Allegiant Air flight to Las Vegas. The inbound flight was grounded in Vegas until the Santa Maria airport reopened. The outbound flight is now expected to depart around 7pm.
