In Arroyo Grande Wednesday, Sheriff's Deputies were doing a probation search. When they do these, they often find things like drugs, or guns. Wednesday was different, deputies were surprised by what they found: a pipe bomb.
The San Luis Obispo County Bomb Squad detonated the pipe bomb. The blast shook neighbors to the point where they came out of their homes to see what was going on.
"This is a very quiet neighborhood," said Patricia Price, who has lived in the neighborhood for 45 years. She said she has never seen anything like this.
"I was just wondering what was going on. The curiosity got the better of me," she explained.
Sheriff's deputies shut down Whiteley Street between Nelson and Ide after they found the bomb in the house. Danielle Grimes lives in the home with her boyfriend Michael Friant. Grimes is on probation for drug charges, which is why officers were at the home in the first place. Her house and two next door were evacuated.
The bomb squad used a robot to get the pipe bomb out of the house before they detonated it.
"They do that by putting a blanket over the top of it in a contained area and destroy it," said San Luis Obispo County Gang Task Force member Sergeant Dave Lipanovich.
Sergeant Lipanovich said the homemade bomb was a pipe 8" long and 2" wide filled with gun powder with a fuse.
"If a pipe bomb explodes it can cause injury or death and depending on where it is at, the fragments blow off and it's just like a hand grenade," he explained.
The Gang Task Force said it is rare to find a pipe bomb during probation checks.
Sheriff's deputies said both suspects face a charge of possession of methamphetamine and a charge of possessing a pipe bomb. The Gang Task Force will continue to search the house for any other parole violations.
