SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Governor-elect Jerry Brown has returned to Sacramento after a brief post-election vacation to learn more about the $25.4 billion budget deficit facing him when he takes office in January.

Brown met Tuesday with officials from the state Department of Finance who oversee the education budget, which accounts for about 55 percent of spending from the state's general fund.

Brown says he supports Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's decision to call a special session to address a $6.1 billion shortfall in the budget for the current fiscal year. The rest of the deficit is projected for the fiscal year that will begin in July.
