OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown says California doesn't need an autocratic CEO to lead it out of its fiscal trouble. Rather, it needs an elder statesman who can broker deals.
Brown took aim Wednesday at GOP gubernatorial front-runner Meg Whitman, a day after launching his own campaign for governor.
Whitman, the billionaire former chief executive of eBay, is running on her corporate record and a promise to eliminate 40,000 state government jobs.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Brown called her plans "consultant-created fairy tales."
He says CEOs are used to giving orders and hand-picking those they work with. But Brown says a governor needs to work with elected lawmakers and deal with unions and judges who second-guess their decisions.
