Olympic Gold Medalist Stephanie Brown Trafton has been named the Athlete of the Week by the USA Track and Field Association.
The Arroyo Grande High and Cal Poly graduate set an American record in the women's discus last week at a meet in Hawaii with a throw of 223 feet, 3 inches. The winning throw came on her third attempt and beat the previous record set in 2007 by three inches.
The 32 year old improved her own personal best by five feet.
"I knew that I had been throwing well this entire season, and I knew that I've been pulling out the stops this year with everything from workouts to diet to technique," Brown-Trafton said. "I knew this year was probably going to be a record setting year for me, not only a personal record, but I did have the intention of breaking the American record."
The Oceano native is a two-time USA Outdoor National champion and became the first American woman since 1932 to win a Gold Medal in the discus throw when she finished first with a throw of 212 feet, 5 inches in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
A six-time All-American with Cal Poly, Stephanie will try to earn a spot on the 2012 team at the US Olympic Trials in late June.
