Cabrillo baseball opens with 2-1 win at SLO

A two-run fourth inning proved to be enough as the Cabrillo baseball team won its season opener 2-1 at San Luis Obispo on Thursday in Sinsheimer Stadium.
The Tigers dropped to 0-2.
The game was scoreless into the fourth inning when the Conquistadores finally got to Tiger starting pitcher Ryan Anderson. Michael Woodard led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Dalton Pacheco singled to left as Woodard moved to third base. With Andrew Watson at the plate, Anderson's pitch skipped in front of the plate and ended up at the backstop allowing Woodard to score the first run of the game. Pachecho moved to second on the wild pitch and advanced to third on a basehit to left by Watson. Steven Phillips drove a high fastball to center field for a sacrifice fly that brought in Pachecho to give Cabrillo a 2-0 lead.
Jordan Shell, a right-handed senior, started for Cabrillo and allowed 1 unearned run in four innings. He escaped jams with strikeouts in the first and third innings. Ricardo Espinoza came in out of the bullpen to secure the victory.
The Tigers rallied in the home half of the fourth when Joey Benadiba singled and Sutter Wells ripped a double over the centerfielder's head to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Dash Foster chopped one of Shell, who stayed with it and threw Foster out at first. Benadiba scored on the play what proved to be the Tigers' only run of the game.
Anderson took the loss despite throwing six solid innings and allowing just two runs and 5 hits. The Tigers stranded five runners in scoring position in the loss.
