Brianna Farley headed in the only goal of the game in the first overtime period to deliver a thrilling 1-0 win for the Cabrillo girls soccer team over rival Santa Ynez on Thursday. The victory left the two rivals tied for first place in the Los Padres League with 9-1 records.
The Conquistadores used their high intensity defense to hold the potent Santa Ynez offense in check.
After two scoreless halves, the Conquistadores broke through on a corner kick sent from Miranda Sparrow to Farley, a senior defender, who headed it by the Pirate goalie.
The Conqs are looking for their third straight League Championship. They won it outright last year and shared it with Santa Ynez in the 2010-2011 season.
Both squads have two league matches remaining. Cabrillo plays at third place Nipomo on Tuesday, while the Pirates visit Templeton. Both matches are at 3:30 pm. The Conqs play at Morro Bay next Thursday and Santa Ynez is at Nipomo for their league finales.
Also on Wednesday, the Santa Maria girls blanked Morro Bay 2-0. The Saints scored their first LPL win in at least seven years. They had lost at least 82-straight league matches.
