Powered by four players in double-figures, the Cabrillo High boys basketball team remained undefeated in Los Padres League play with a 64-42 win over crosstown rival Lompoc on Monday night.
The Braves led 15-14 after the first quarter, but Cabrillo led 26-24 at the half. The Conquistadores extended their lead to five points after three quarters and outscored the Braves 19-4 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
"It's kind of how we play, we try to wear you down mentally and physically. And I think we made some adjustments at half time that I think made a big difference," said Cabrllo head coach Gary West.
Michael Woodard led the Conquistadores with 16 points, including 9 in the second half. Chad Brodhead scored 8 points in the first quarter and finished with 15. Josh West poured in 14 points and Josh Harris scored 7 of his 10 points in the decisive fourth quarter for Cabrillo.
The win over the crosstown rival was a memorable game for Cabrillo senior guard Josh West. "Growing up as a kid this is what I dreamed of with this is my senior year and to win in this gym and hear the bell at the end of the game," said an excited West after the game.
Freshman Torey Sims led the Braves with 13 points. B.J. Taylor added 12 and Chris Gonzales poured in 9 for Lompoc. The Braves fell to 6-10 overall and 4-4 in league.
Cabrillo is now 9-0 in league and 15-8 overall The Conquistadores are ranked #12 this week in the CIF Division 3A Coaches Poll. They travel to second place Santa Maria. The Saints are 6-2 in league and are trying to avenge a one-point, last second loss at Cabrillo earlier this month.
A win on Wednesday for Cabrillo would clinch the outright league title. The Conquistadores shared the crown with Morro Bay a year ago and last won it outright three years ago.
