The Lady Conquistadores are hoping their third-straight trip to the CIF semifinals is the charm. The Cabrillo girls soccer team hosts San Marino in the Division 5 semifinals on Tuesday at 3 pm.
Cabrillo, which enters with a 15-7-4 record, has lost in the semis the previous two years. San Marino is 16-3-3 and making its first appearance in the semifinals. One of the teams is guaranteed its first-ever berth in a CIF title game.
The Conqs are coming off a 1-0 upset at St. Margaret's, the two-time defending CIF champions. Sophomore Carley Chatterley's first goal of the season was the game winner and propelled the Conqs into the Final Four.
The Conquistadores have seen balanced scoring all season. Kelsey Sherry leads the Conqs with 8 goals to go with 7 assists, Marissa Reyna has 6 goals and 9 assists, Jamie Lee Miller has 7 goals and 8 assists, while Brianna Farley has logged 5 goals and 7 assists. Goalie Kiki Miller has pitched 14 shutouts in the net and made 88 saves.
San Marino knocked off Village Christian in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals. San Marino won 5-3 in PK's behind sophomore goalie Sarah Blasher, who stopped two penalty kicks to cement the win in her first career start. Blasher started after the team's starting goalie went down with an injury in the second round.
Hope Welder leads the team with 20 goals, Jordyn Duncan has scored 14 times, and Hayley Thompson has tallied 10 goals and 15 assists to lead the Titans.
