Cabrillo soccer to play Saturday in Downey for CIF title

The Cabrillo girls soccer team learned its date with destiny on Wednesday. The Lady Conquistadores will play top seeded La Serna in the Division 5 championship on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. at Warren High in Downey. The school is located at 8141 De Palma Street.

The CIF-Southern Section Office released its championship game schedule on Wednesday for boys and girls soccer. The title games are set for Friday and Saturday at two different locations.

Cabrillo earned a spot in its first-ever title game with a 3-1 semifinal win on Tuesday over San Marino. Senior Kelsey Sherry secured her first career hat-trick to solidify the victory. "This is something that we have really worked hard for all year. The girls have put in tireless effort and training and fitness to get to this point. So I'm happy for them," said head coach Derrick Wong.

The Conquistadores lost to La Serna last year in the CIF semifinals and in a preseason match earlier this season. Like it worked out in the semifinals, the Conquistadores are hoping the third time with La Serna is the charm.

"We've worked since freshman year trying to get there the last two times in the semifinals losing was a kill and the third time was the charm," said senior midfielder Miranda Sparrow. "I'm glad we can make school history and make it to the final and show what we have," she added.
