CAL FIRE suspends all open burning in ten counties including Monterey

Beginning Monday, CAL FIRE will suspend all open burning in Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Stanislaus, San Benito, Monterey, and Western San Joaquin counties.

Open burning is any fire where the flame is exposed to the environment.

Officials say campfires are allowed as long as they are within organized campgrounds or on private property, and the landowner has given permission. They must be set up so they won't spread to nearby vegetation.

Industrial burning is also allowed as long as CAL FIRE officials inspect the burn site and issue a permit.

CAL FIRE declared the burn ban because it's a proven technique for preventing large fires from starting.

The ban begins Monday at 8 a.m.
