Former Cal Poly All-American linebacker Chris Gocong, now in his seventh NFL season with the Cleveland Browns suffered a season-ending torn right Achilles in practice on Saturday. Gocong is expected to undergo surgery as early as Monday.
Gocong planted and then grabbed his lower leg while defending a tight end in a passing drill. He never left his feet, and the injury was non-contact. Gocong knelt for a moment before falling to his back with his hands over his face.
Gocong was projected to be the Browns starting weakside linebacker but will now have to sit and watch as the Browns try and get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2002.
In an appearance at Dick's Sporting Good's in San Luis Obispo in March, Gocong expressed excitement about what the Browns would be able to accomplish this season. Gocong had the best two seasons of his career the past two years playing with the Browns. He spent his first four seasons in Philadelphia after being drafted in the third round by the Eagles.
