UC Davis third baseman Paul Politi singled to rightcenter field with two outs in the bottom of the eleventh inning to score the winning run from second base and give the Aggies a 5-4 walk-off win over Cal Poly on Friday.
The Mustangs continued to struggle on the road and dropped to 9-7 in Big West play and 26-18 overall. The Aggies snapped Cal Poly's four game winning streak and improved to 17-24 overall and 5-8 in conference.
The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning on a run-scoring single from Jimmy Allen and a sacrifice fly from David Armendariz. The Aggies answered with four runs in the bottom half against Joey Wagman. Scott Kalush hit a three-run home run to give the Aggies their first lead of the game.
Trailing 4-2 into the top of the ninth inning, Cal Poly rallied to tie it on a two-run, two out single from Allen that scored Denver Chavez and Mike Miller.
The loss went to Reed Reilly. He allowed 7 hits and 1 run in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Cal Poly tallied 11 hits in the game, including three from Miller and two by Allen and Chris Hoo. The Aggies collected 16 hits led by Politi with four hits.
Game two of the three game weekend series is Saturday at 1pm. The series finale is Sunday at 1pm.
Because UCSB lost 2-0 to UC Irvine on Friday, the Mustangs, Gauchos and Anteaters are in a three-way tie for third place at 9-7 in Big West play.
