The Cal Poly baseball team is thinking sweep headed into its final Big West series of the season. The Mustangs need to sweep UC Riverside to have any shot at a postseason berth.
The Mustangs have won six of their last seven games headed into a three game series at UC Riverside. Cal Poly is 33-20 overall and 13-8 in conference. The Mustangs trail second place Long Beach State by one game and are two games back of first place Cal State Fullerton.
The NCAA Selection Committee announces its picks for the postseason on Monday. The Mustangs are a bubble team with some publications putting them in a Regional and others leaving them out. The Mustangs know they have to take care of business to improve their chances.
"We try not to take any pitches off and we value every pitch. So that's what we're going to take into the series. We know we've got to win all 3 and hopefully we can do that," said shortstop Mike Miller, who leads the Mustangs with a .364 batting average and ranks tops in the Big West with 53 runs scored.
"We're looking for a sweep. But we just need to play our game, not worry about any other teams in the Big West or what UC Riverside is trying to do. We just need to play solid and we should come out on top this weekend," said Mitch Haniger. The junior leads the Big West with 12 home runs, 58 RBI and a .618 slugging percentage.
The series starts Friday at 6pm in Riverside and ends Sunday with a 1pm game. The NCAA Selection Show is Monday at 9am.
Cal Poly made its only NCAA Regional appearance in 2009.
