Junior midfielder George Malki patiently waited for an opening and when it appeared he kicked home the game winner in the 77th-minute as Cal Poly beat UCSB 1-0. The win advances the Mustangs to the Big West Tournament, which starts Wednesday. The goal was Malki's fourth of the season and sent out a roar from the Spanos Stadium sell-out crowd of 11,075. When the final horn sounded many of those fans rushed the field to celebrate Cal Poly's first season sweep of the Gauchos in 15 years.
Cal Poly finishes the regular season 11-6-1 overall, 6-3-1 in the Big West. UCSB lost six of its last eight games to complete the season 10-6-3 overall and 4-5-3 in the conference. The Mustangs finished second in the Big West North Division behind UC-Davis. Cal Poly would have also advanced to the tournament with a tie against UCSB. The Mustangs will play at Big West South Division winner Cal State Northridge on Wednesday. UC-Davis will host Cal State Fullerton with the winners playing for the Big West Championship on Saturday.
UCSB managed just one shot on goal against Cal Poly freshman goal keeper Wade Hamilton. The Mustangs had three shots on goal.
Cal Poly is playing its best soccer of the season, the Mustangs are 5-1-1 in their last seven games.
