21st ranked Cal Poly won its first ever NCAA Regional game on Friday at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles. The Mustangs beat 25th ranked San Diego, 9-2 to advance to the winners bracket of the four team, double-elimination tournament.
Cal Poly starter Joey Wagman (13-3) pitched eight innings to earn his program record 13th win of the season. Freshmen designated hitter Brian Mundell drove in four runs and senior third baseman Jimmy Allen had four hits as the Mustangs won their 40th game, they're now 40-17. Cal Poly has exceeded the 40-win mark just two other times, posting 41 victories in both 1977 and 1992 as a Division II school.
Mundell hit a solo home run in the first inning to put the Mustangs up 1-0. The Tereros answered with single runs in the second and fourth innings for a 2-1 advantage. Cal Poly scored twice in the fifth on an RBI single from senior Denver Chavez and a sacrifice fly by Mundell.
The Mustangs scored six times in the sixth inning to take the 9-2 lead. Freshman Peter Van Gansen walked with the bases loaded to force in the first run of the sixth. Chavez was then hit by a pitch to force in another. With two outs, Mundell knocked in two runs with a single to left. After a Nick Torres walk re-loaded the bases, Allen singled home two more.
Wagman gave up six hits and three walks while allowing two runs, only one of the runs was earned. Junior Chase Johnson pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the win.
San Diego junior third baseman Kris Bryant, who entered the game with a national best 31 home runs went 0-for-3 with a walk.
The Mustangs out-hit the Tereros 11-6. Cal Poly made two errors, San Diego made one.
On Saturday at 6:00pm, Cal Poly will play 9th ranked UCLA. The Bruins beat San Diego State, 5-3. San Diego will play San Diego State at 2:00pm in an elimination game.
