Neil Fendall, a safety under head coach Tim Walsh at Portland State in the mid-1990s, has been hired as an assistant football coach at Cal Poly. Fendall will coach the defensive backs.
He replaces Randy Hanson, who has resigned, effective Friday. Hanson was suspended indefinitely on August 6 after he was arrested on suspicion of hitting another person with a beer bottle during a fight in a Pismo Beach bar.
For the last six seasons, Fendall was an assistant coach at Linfield College in Oregon. Linfield was 10-1 a year ago for its 56th consecutive winning season, captured the Northwest Conference title and earned a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs, falling to Wesley 49-34 in the second round.
A 1997 graduate of Portland State, Fendall lettered four times in football, earning most valuable player honors as a safety. He served as the Vikings' team captain and played on three NCAA playoff squads during his time in the Park Blocks.
Fendall, a three-sport athlete at Milwaukie High School, wan an assistant coach at Milwaukie, Oregon City and Grants Pass high schools for eight seasons before he was hired at Linfield.
Fendall and his wife, Lynne, have three children: Taylor, 10, Hannah, 7, and Gracie, 4.
