Cal Poly football picked to finish fourth in Big Sky

The Cal Poly football team was picked to finish fourth in the Big Sky by the media and coaches. Last year the Mustangs were picked to finish fifth in the conference and they earned a share of the title with Eastern Washington and Montana State. Montana State is first, Eastern Washington second and Montana third in both polls.

The Coaches Poll was voted on by the conference's 13 head coaches while the Media Poll was done by sports information directors from all 13 schools and 48 members of the media, including KSBY.

Cal Poly didn't receive any first place votes from the coaches but did receive one from the media.

A total of 17 Mustangs who started at least four games a year ago return -- seven on offense and 10 on defense. Cal Poly does have to replace quarterback Andre Broadous, slotback Deonte Williams and linebacker Kennith Jackson.

Montana State senior quarterback DeNarius McGhee was selected as the Big Sky Preseason Offensive MVP while Montana senior linebacker Jordan Tripp was picked as the Defensive MVP.

Cal Poly offensive tackle Giovanni Sani, defensive tackle Sullivan Grosz and special teams player Chris Judge, all of whom will be seniors were named to the Big Sky Preseason All-Conference Team.

Sani (6-5, 275) started all 12 games at left tackle a year ago and earned All-Big Sky honorable mention praise. He anchored a Mustang offensive line that enabled Cal Poly to finish first in the nation in passing efficiency, third in rushing offense, seventh in scoring offense and eighth in sacks allowed.

Grosz (6-4, 280) had 58 total tackles a year ago, including a team-leading 13.5 tackles for lost yardage and six sacks. He also notched five quarterback hurries en route to second-team All-Big Sky honors.

Judge (6-3, 235), a backup defensive end a year ago, made 17 tackles on defense and special teams. He also had a sack, three quarterback hurries and made three starts, earning All-Big Sky honorable mention praise.
