The Cal Poly football team is ready to kick off preparations for its inaugural season as a member of the Big Sky Conference. Fourth year head coach Tim Walsh and the Mustangs open fall practice Monday morning.
They're coming off a 6-5 season, where they shared the Great West title in the Conference's final season of existence for football. The Mustangs have posted winning records in eight of the last nine seasons.
Quarterback Andre Broadous, slotback Deonte Williams, linebacker Johnny Millard and Preseason All-Conference linebacker Kennith Jackson are some of the key returners for the Mustangs. They lost 25 seniors, including 15 starters, from last year's team to graduation.
Walsh and his staff say they feel prepared and ready to go. "You start to look at the people you have playing for you and are you good enough. And especially going into the Big Sky this year and obviously that's a critical deal for us. But we think we've recruited well. We think we've got some older guys who are ready to step up and even though we are a young football team with only 12 seniors we really think we're really competitive enough to win the Big Sky championship in our first year," said Walsh.
Some true freshmen like B.J. Nard and Wisconsin transfer Jake Irwin, a defensive end, are some of the new faces coaches expect could have immediate impacts this fall. Walsh and his staff will welcome 23 newcomers, 19 redshirts, 11 walk-ons and 9 transfers.
Players undergo physicals on Sunday. However, Walsh says senior cornerback Bijon Samoodi will miss the 2012 season though due to a hip injury.
The Mustangs open the season September 1 in Alex G. Spanos Stadium against the University of San Diego.
