Cal Poly football's quest for perfection is over

After forcing fumbles on Sacramento State's first two possessions the 11th ranked Cal Poly football team had an early 10-0 lead.

The Hornets dominated the rest of the first half, racking up 326 yards of offense in the first two quarters to take a 28-17 lead to the half.

The Mustangs scored late in the third quarter to pull within 28-23. Cal Poly got the ball back twice with a chance to take the lead but weren't able to capitalize on either possession.

Sacramento State threw a 32 yard touchdown pass with 3:09 to play to go ahead 38-23.

A long kick off return by Chris Nichols got the Mustangs into Sacramento State territory.

On 4th and 7, Andre Broadous completed a pass to Willie Tucker for first down yardage, Tucker then weaved from one side of the field to the other and dove in the endzone for a 44 yard touchdown.

Cal Poly failed on a two point conversion attempt and trailed 35-29 with 2:10 to play.

The Mustangs tried an on-side kick but the Hornets recovered.

Still, Cal Poly had three timeouts left and after stopping the Hornets for no yards on the first two downs, Sacramento State's running back busted through for a first down run on 3rd and 10.

Sacramento State iced the game with three kneel downs from there.

Cal Poly drops to 7-1 overall, 5-1 in the Big Sky.

Sacramento State improves to 6-3, 4-2 in the conference.

The Mustangs play at top ranked Eastern Washington next Saturday.
