The Cal Poly football team received a police escort from campus on Friday as the Big Sky Conference co-champion squad hit the road for its second round playoff game in Huntsville, Texas.

The Mustangs started the road trip with a traditional moment of silence at the memorial in Alex G. Spanos Stadium that honors the victims of the 1960 plane crash. They boarded the buses and headed for the Santa Maria Airport. Special guests Robin Ventura and President Jeffrey Armstrong were among the special guests invited on Cal Poly's chartered plane to Texas.

Cal Poly plays at Sam Houston State on Saturday. The 9-2 Mustangs are making their first postseason appearance since 2008. "It's the third time in 19 years so it's been a while. So for us to make the playoffs we know we're making the whole community, our school, student-body happy so it's definitely a blessing," said senior running back Deonte Williams, an All-Conference First Team pick.

The 8-3 Bearkats lost in the FCS title game last season and have not lost at home this season. The Mustangs left the Central Coast feeling their coaches prepared them for battle.

"We didn't take anything off. If anything we just prepared harder. I think we're really ready to go right now you know. It's a playoff game and they're a great team and we think we're a great team so it's going to be a really good game," said senior linebacker Kennith Jackson.

Cal Poly flew directly from Santa Maria to College Station and then drove an hour to Huntsville, Texas for a walk-through at the stadium.

Kickoff is at 1pm California time on Saturday. KSBY Sports' Bill Halter is with the team and he'll check in from Texas Friday night and provide complete coverage of the game on Saturday evening's newscasts.
