If graduation wasn't enough of a reason to celebrate, a Cal Poly grad got a pleasant surprise Saturday.
Jessica Freedman, a mathematics major, walked up on stage to accept her degree Saturday. But as she shook the dean's hand, the dean asked her what it would be like if her brother, on a tour overseas, could see her graduate.
Then, her brother appeared.
"I started thinking I wanted to surprise my sister a couple of weeks ago, before I got back," said Lance Corporal Eric Freedman. "I got the chance to."
LCpl Freedman just finished serving seven months with the Marines in Afghanistan. The Freedman family is from San Jose.
