Cal Poly is 3rd ranked team in the nation

The Cal Poly baseball team has had 9 straight winning weeks to start the season which is why the Mustangs have been making a steady climb up the national rankings. Cal Poly is ranked #3 by Baseball America, Perfect Game, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The Mustangs are ranked #4 but receiving a first place vote in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. Cal Poly started the week off by beating Saint Mary's 6-2 on Tuesday before sweeping Hawai'i in a Big West Conference series in Honolulu by scores of 3-2, 4-3 and 8-3. The Mustangs are now 30-5 overall and 8-1 in the Big West. They are tied with UC Irvine for first place in the conference with 15 Big West games to go. Cal Poly has won six straight games, 12 of their last 13 and 20 of 22. Other Big West teams ranked this week include Cal State Fullerton (18-13), as high as #23 by USA Today/ESPN; UC Santa Barbara (22-8), as high as #14 by Perfect Game; and UC Irvine (24-11), ranked #21 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Before this season, Cal Poly's highest ranking since moving to Division I for the 1995 season was #12 by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper after getting off to a 17-4 start in 2009. The Mustangs went on to earn their first Division I postseason playoff berth that year. Last season Cal Poly earned its second playoff berth but the Mustangs have yet to advance in the National Tournament. Virginia (30-6) is the top ranked team in the Baseball America, USA Today/ESPN, NCBWA and Perfect Game polls while Louisiana-Lafayette (34-4) holds the top spot in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll. Cal Poly visits Bakersfield on Tuesday night before returning home to host Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference series Thursday through Saturday in Baggett Stadium.
