The Week of Welcome or WOW at Cal Poly is underway and there are some new additions which include the kick-off assembly at Spanos Stadium. At least 8,000 students and their families attended Tuesday night's festivities.
There are some other new measures this year: increased patrol and larger fines for those who partake in the after parties.
"The first offense for a noise violation would be $350 normally. Under the Safety Enhancement Zone it's $700," explained San Luis Obispo Police Chief Steve Gesell.
The Safety Enhancement Zone means Cal Poly wants its students to be safe and to be good neighbors, so breaking the law comes with double the price.
"Drinking in public, fights, urination in public, noise violations, loud parties, unruly gatherings, which are extremely large loud parties," all fall into this category, said Chief Gesell.
The new fines were printed on door hangers and hung on area apartments and homes. The increased fines include; $2,000 for a minor in possession of alcohol; almost $1,500 for hosting a party, where minors are drinking alcohol; and $1,000 for a noise violation.
San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly University Police will be out in full force throughout the week.
"We'll be on bike patrol, foot patrol, and also vehicle patrol," said George Hughes, University Police Chief for Cal Poly.
The increased patrol will not only be this week, but on other partying holidays like Halloween and St. Patrick's Day.
Partying aside, WOW is about helping new students get acquainted with their new ones.
"We have scheduled activities that turned throughout the time that they're here at Cal Poly," said Andrene Kaiwi-Lenting, Director of Orientation, Cal Poly.
Most of the WOW activities will be on campus this year. Last year many of the events were out in the community.
