Cal Poly loses at Santa Barbara in double overtime

Despite a career high 26 points from redshirt freshman Reese Morgan, Cal Poly lost 83-81 in double-overtime at UCSB. Both teams are now 3-3 in Big West play.

Morgan made seven of his first nine three point attempts including one with 1:02 left in regulation to put the Mustangs up three. UCSB redshirt freshman Taran Brown answered with a deep three pointer to tie the game with 40 seconds left. The game went to overtime as Cal Poly was unable to score on its final possession of regulation.

The Mustangs took a 71-69 lead with 1:17 to play in overtime on a Morgan jump shot. The Gauchos tied it with 11 seconds left on a layup by Mitch Brewe. Cal Poly wasn't able to get a shot off after that and the game went to double overtime tied at 71.

In the second extra session neither team led by more than two points. Cal Poly took a one point lead with 29 seconds left on a driving layup by senior guard Drake U'u. UCSB junior guard Kyle Boswell scored and got fouled with 12 seconds left, he converted the free throw to give the Gauchos a two point lead. Boswell was 4-4 at the free throw line in the second overtime. After a timeout, Cal Poly got the ball to Morgan off a screen, he was forced into a cross court pass to junior Chris Eversley on the baseline. Eversely got a good look from 16 feet but the shot missed at the buzzer.

Morgan finished 8-12 from the floor and 7-11 from behind the three point line. Eversley added 16 points and 15 rebounds. As a team the Mustangs shot 37% from the floor but made 10-22 (46%) three pointers. Boswell led the Gauchos with 23 points.

Cal Poly has now lost three straight games, all on the road. The Mustangs have lost six straight in Santa Barbara and have lost 12 of the last 13 meetings in the Blue-Green Rivalry.

On Thursday Cal Poly hosts Hawaii (4-2), UCSB hosts Cal State Northridge (0-6).
