The Cal Poly baseball team lost the game and series to UC Davis on Sunday. The Aggies beat the Mustangs 5-4 to take two of three games in the series. Cal Poly is now 8-12 on the road this season and 5-10 in one run games. The series loss to UC Davis is a shot to the Mustangs playoff chances. Overall Cal Poly is now 27-19 and 10-8 in the Big West. The Mustangs are all alone in fourth place. The Aggies are now 18-25, 6-9 in the conference.
UC Davis scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings off of Cal Poly starter Bryan Granger. The true freshman only lasted 1 2/3 innings.
Cal Poly scored a run in the fourth and three in the fifth to tie. Junior center fielder Mitch Haniger hit his Big West leading 11th homerun leading off the fourth. The solo shot extended his conference leading RBI total to 51. In the fifth, sophomore first baseman Tim Wise hit a two run homer, his second of the season.
Wise singled to lead off the seventh and Jimmy Allen got to second with one out in the eighth but the Mustangs couldn't get them in.
The score stayed tied at four until UC Davis first baseman Eric Johnson drove in a run with a single up the middle with two out in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Mustang freshman Matt Imhof pitched five scoreless innings in relief of Granger, allowing two hits and one walk with four strikeouts. The loss went to Cal Poly sophomore Michael Holback (0-2.)
UC Davis outhit Cal Poly 11-9, Wise led the Mustangs with three hits batting in the second hole.
Cal Poly returns home to host CSU Bakersfield (19-23) for a three-game non-conference series Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium.
