The Cal Poly men's basketball team will play in its first ever division one postseason tournament. The Mustangs accepted an invitation to the 32-team CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Cal Poly will play at Weber State in an opening-round game on Wednesday night.
Cal Poly (18-13), was eliminated by Pacific, 55-53 in the Big West Tournament semifinals on Friday. The Tigers went on to win the tournament title to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Pacific is a 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will play second seeded Miami in the first round.
Seeded second for the Big Sky Conference Tournament, Weber State (26-6, 18-2) enjoyed a 13-game winning streak en route to reaching the championship game. The Wildcats however lost to top-seeded Montana in the finals, 67-64.
Opening round games for the CollegeInsider.com Tournament will be played March 19-20 with second round action set for March 21-23. Quarterfinal games will be played March 24-26 with the semifinals set for March 28-30. The championship game, scheduled for Tuesday, April 2, will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network. All games will be played at campus sites.
Cal Poly enters the tournament after its best regular season in 19 years at the Division one level. The Mustangs finished third in the Big West with a 12-6 mark, overall they are 18-13 with a marquee win at UCLA. Cal Poly was 13-1 inside the Mott Athletics Center.
Despite that Big West Tournament loss, Cal Poly enters the CollegeInsider.com Tournament having won nine of its last 11 games.
The CIT started in 2009 as a 16-team competition, the CollegeInsider.com Tournament expanded to 24 programs the following season before reaching the current 32-team format in 2011. Oriented toward mid-major programs not selected for the NCAA Tournament or National Invitational Tournament (NIT), teams selected for the CollegeInsider.com Tournament must feature at least a .500 winning percentage. Further criteria for selection includes, but is not limited to, strength of schedule, strength of conference and record during the final 10 games of season.
