Armed with the 12th-best ranked class of incoming freshmen in the nation, the Cal Poly men's soccer team has been picked to finish third in the Big West Conference Northern Division according to the preseason coaches poll.
UCSB finished first in the poll after receiving all 8 first place votes. UC Davis finished second and Sacramento State came in fourth.
Defending Big West champion and 13th ranked UC Irvine was picked first in the Southern Division followed by Northridge, UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton. This is the first time since 1984 that the conference has been split into two divisions for men's soccer.
Seventh-year head coach Paul Holocher welcomes back 5 starters and 13 letterwinners from his 2011 squad that produced the finest defensive season in program history.
Cal Poly hosts San Francisco this Saturday at 7pm for an exhibition before playing another tune-up at Santa Clara on August 18. The Mustangs open their 19th season of Division I soccer at Seattle on Friday, August 24. Their regular season home opener is Friday, September 9 against Valparaiso.
