Cal Poly men's soccer releases challenging 2013 schedule

Highlighted by four matches at programs that reached the NCAA Tournament last season, the Cal Poly men's soccer team unveiled its 20-match schedule for the 2013 regular season on Monday.

The Mustangs return 16 letterwinners and three All-Big West picks from a 2012 team that tied program records with 11 wins and 6 conference victories.

Under the guidance of eighth year head coach Paul Holocher, Cal Poly opens its 20th season of Division I competitive with a three match round trip on August 30 at Drake (6-11-4). The Mustangs play at Missouri Valley Champion and College Cup semifinalist Creighton on Sunday, September 1. Creighton went 18-4-2 a season ago. The Mustangs last played the Bluejays in 2009 and lost 1-0 to the then-2nd ranked team in the nation.

Cal Poly ends the season-opening road trip on Thursday, September 5 at defending Pac-12 champion UCLA, which wen 13-3-3 last year. Cal Poly lost 1-0 at home to then-12th ranked UCLA in 2012.

The Mustangs play Gonzaga (4-14-1) on Sunday, September 8 to open the home portion of their schedule. They host Penn on Friday, September 13 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs, followed by a home mach against San Jose State on Sunday, September 15. Cal Poly then plays San Francisco at Spanos Stadium on Friday, September 20 and concludes the homestand with the program's first-ever meeting with Yale on Sunday, September 22.

Cal Poly opens Big West play at home against UC Riverside on Friday, October 4 and against Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, October 6.

Both legs of the Blue-Green Rivalry against UCSB will take place in a fifteen day span. The Mustangs host the Gauchos on Friday, October 25. The rematch at UCSB is set for Saturday, November 9. Last year, Cal Poly overcame a 1-0 deficit with 66 seconds to go to win 2-1 in overtime for the Mustangs' first win in Isla Vista in fourteen years. Last year's match at Cal Poly drew a sellout crowd of 11,075 that matched the tenth largest regular season crowd in NCAA history. A crowd of 13,467 filled Harder Stadium in the second match between the rivals a year ago, the seventh largest regular season crowd in history. Eleven of the top 27 regular season crowds in NCAA history have involved the Blue Green Rivalry.
