A Cal Poly student could face charges after police say they found an unloaded rifle and ammunition in his room in a campus residence hall.

Cal Poly Police Chief George Hughes says investigators have not turned up any evidence suggesting the student was going to use the gun in a violent act, but he says it's illegal to have a gun on a college campus.

Officers searched the student's room after getting a tip a couple of days ago.

The student, who police say legally owned the gun, was out of town but came back to campus to talk to police. Investigators say they can't release his name at this time. They say he will not be living at the residence hall during the university investigation.
