After thinking about retirement for years, Cal Poly President, Warren Baker makes it official.
President Baker says," It's been in the works for quite a while. I actually thought I was going to retire two years ago but we had some significant challenges but, I thought today is as good as any day."
Baker started at Cal Poly in 1979.
Under his leadership, the college has grown in many ways.
Friend and colleague, Phil Bailey credits Doctor Baker for much of the university's success.
Phil Bailey, Dean, College of Science and Mathematics says,"We didn't have a strong national reputation before he came here and now we do. We're listed in Forbes magazine and US News and World Report, Princeton Review for the best colleges in the United States, Kaplan Guide, all sorts of other areas in which we have achieved a national reputation and we've gone on to become one of the most selected public universities in the United States."
During his tenure as president, Baker oversaw close to a billion dollars in expansion projects on campus buildings.
But, Baker is quick to share the credit with students and staff.
President Baker says,"The imagination and the good ideas come from the community and the president is really a servant to help achieve that."
Baker will remain in office until his replacement is named.
After that, he plans to teach part time at the college.
Here are the next steps for Cal Poly.
The Board of Trustees for the California State University will conduct a search for a new president.
That search is expected to take about six months to complete.
The board hopes to find a replacement by mid 2010.
