Cal Poly first-year aerospace engineering major Noah Falck is being regarded as a "finish line hero" from the newspaper, the Boston Herald, after he helped injured runners after Monday's explosions at the Boston Marathon.
Falck, who is a Cadet in Cal Poly's Military Science (ROTC) department, said helping others on that day was all about, "Honor, duty, and self of service. And, I felt like that was part of my duty and that I should do the best I could do to help others."
Falck said it was instinctual to run toward the bomb-stricken finish line, rather than most people running away from it. There, he also helped fire officials identify a suspicious bag, though he said, thankfully, it turned out to be nothing. Falck said his time in the ROTC department has reinforced his Army values to help others, especially in times of need.
Falck finished the marathon before the explosions went off, finishing at a time of 3 hours and 10 minutes. But nothing else, not even the medal he won, mattered in that moment of distress.
"We don't run away and we don't hide. They're never gonna win, the people that are trying to bomb and scare us, they're never gonna accomplish what they're trying to," said Falck.
Falck said he will honor those who were lost or injured by never stopping his efforts of helping.
He said, "I want to just keep running because those people, they would just have kept running, and they would have done the same thing that I did."
Falck said he hopes to return back to Boston one day, to run the marathon again.
