Former Cal Poly football standout Asa Jackson and Morro Bay High graduate Jerome Long are days away from finding out where he will start his NFL career.
The seven-round NFL Draft runs Thursday through Saturday. Jackson says he is hoping to get picked in the third or fourth round. The cornerback says he is excited, not nervous, going into the draft and doesn't care who he gets taken by. "Obviously there are always best case scenario places but wherever it's my place to go I want to go and be able to start this career," said Jackson during a phone interview with KSBY.
Jackson was born and raised an Oakland Raiders fan but says he might have a new favorite team come this weekend. The first round is Thursday. The second and third rounds are on Friday and the draft finishes on Saturday.
The last Mustang to be drafted was wide receiver Ramses Barden. The former Cal Poly All-American went in the third round with the 85th overall selection to the New York Giants in 2009. Over the last seven years, three Mustangs have been selected in the third round of the NFL Draft. Jordan Beck went 90th overall to the Atlanta Falcons in 2005, while Chris Gocong was picked by the Eagles as the 71st overall pick in 2006. A total of 26 former Mustang football players have been drafted by NFL teams.
Asa finished his Cal Poly career with 199 tackcles, 8 interceptions and 32 pass breakups.
Long finished a productive career with San Diego State. The All-Mountain West defensive lineman ranked second on the Aztecs in tackles, tackles for loss and sacks this past season. The 6-5, 290 pound Long is a former wrestling and football standout former Morro Bay High.
