Cal Poly's Deonte Williams added to FCS Player of the Year Watch List

Cal Poly slotback Deonte Williams was one of three players from the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision added to the 2012 Walter Payton Award watch list by the Sports Network on Tuesday.

The Award is given to the top offensive player in the FCS at the end of the season. Williams is the first Mustang on the watch list since wide reciver Ramses Barden in 2008.

The senior slotback has rushed for 926 yards in seven games and has surpasses the 100 yard mark in a game six times this season. He needs just 74 yards to become the 15th Mustang to run for 1,000 yards in a season and two more 100-yard games to tie James Noble for most 100 yard games in a season.

Williams leads the Big Sky and ranks #7 in the FCS in rushing with an average of 132.3 yards per game. Last Saturday, Williams carried the ball a career-high 27 times for 169 yards in a 37-25 win over Portland State to help the Mustangs improve to 7-0.

Williams rushed for a Mustang career-high of 188 yards against UC Davis last month. He is averaging 6.9 yards per carry and has caught 7 passes for 47 yards and 1 TD. He has 9 rushing touchdowns this season.
