Cal Poly sophomore closer Reed Reilly is one of 51 players named to the mid-season watch list for the ninth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award.
The annual award is presented to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball.
Reilly has earned 10 saves in the first 10 weeks of the 2013 season, including six in the Mustangs' first 13 games. He also has a 2-2 record and 1.87 ERA, picking up wins against San Jose State (two scoreless innings) and UC Davis (5.2 innings, one run, six hits).
Reilly has pitched three or more innings five times this season and struck out a career-high seven in three innings for a save in Cal Poly's season opener at San Francisco. He has recorded 52 strikeouts in 43.1 innings with just 12 walks.
As a middle reliever as a redshirt freshman, Reilly compiled a 5-2 record and 2.80 ERA in 25 appearances. He tossed four scoreless innings in relief with just one hit for the win against Cal State Fullerton and three scoreless frames with season-high four strikeouts for another win against Pepperdine.
Reilly notched 45 strikeouts in 54.2 innings as a freshman and allowed just six earned runs in his last 16 appearances. He was a four-year letter winner as a pitcher and shortstop at JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano.
National saves leader Tyler Rogers, a senior from Austin Peay, along with Oregon junior Jimmie Sherfy, a 2012 Stopper of the Year Award finalist, and Cal State Fullerton junior Michael Lorenzen head the list with five weeks remaining in the regular season.
Rogers has 14 saves as of April 22. Sherfy and Lorenzen, along with Florida Atlantic senior Hugh Adams, Jacksonville State sophomore Travis Stout, Mississippi State sophomore Jonathan Holder and South Carolina senior Tyler Webb, have 12 saves each.
The Southeastern Conference leads the way with eight players each on this year's mid-season list, while the Atlantic Coast, Pacific 12, Ohio Valley and Southern Conferences have four pitchers each on the list. The Big West Conference is represented by Reilly , Lorenzen and UC Riverside's Trevor Frank.
Nominations for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award were made by baseball sports information/media relations contacts. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released June 5, prior to the start of NCAA Super Regional tournament competition.
Cal Poly, 27-11 overall following Tuesday's 7-1 win at California and ranked as high as No. 18 this week, resumes Big West play at Long Beach State on Friday through Sunday.
