After winning its Big West Conference opener on Friday the Cal Poly men's soccer team was not able to make it two for two. The Mustangs lost, 3-2 in overtime at 24th ranked UC-Riverside on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops Cal Poly to 6-4 on the season and 1-1 in the conference.
The Mustangs scored in the seventh minute as senior midfielder Chris Gaschen set up George Malki for his second goal of the season. The Highlanders scored 44 seconds later as junior defender Hayden Leslie headed a corner kick past sophomore goalkeeper Chase Hauser.
In the 40th minute, Cal Poly redshirt freshman midfielder Matt LaGrassa received a cross from freshman outside back Kip Colvey before scoring from three yards out. The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead to the half.
UC Riverside tied it again in the 52nd minute as senior forward Jimmy Martinez got one past Hauser.
46 seconds into overtime, UC Riverside sophomore midfielder Juan Mendoza set up the game-winning strike by sliding a pass from the middle of the turf to Ottis Earle, who beat Hauser in a one-on-one situation.
Cal Poly will return home on Friday night and Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs host Cal State Northridge at 7:00pm Friday and UC-Irvine on Sunday at 1:00pm.
